My greater concern really is about young children. My sense is that a lot of people don’t know much about early childhood development, and so may not appreciate how much learning and development takes place through tactile, physical play. As much as I love my video games, I don’t think a 5-year old is disadvantaged at all by not using them.

Very valid concerns — most of which I share. Despite my outspokenness about innovation and progress, I actually tend to be pretty conservative — in the original Burkean sense of “let’s build on, rather than destroy, all the good stuff we already have.” I sat through enough failed computer sessions in 80’s classrooms (e.g. 45 minutes to get everyone booted up and logged in before the bell rings) to know sophistication isn’t necessarily improvement.

I especially like your idea about “keeping some old stand-bys in the mix” and “giving them a deeper toolkit.” If digital media is as effective as we all want it to be then it shouldn’t be hard to learn anyways.

In Peterborough there is a dancing clown outside of a flowershop during the hot summer months. I always hope that it’s not a minimum-wage teenager risking heat stroke! Then again, the dedication and enthusiasm for a job like that might mean it’s the owner?

Good point and well said. I first became aware of this when I lived with some gay folks in the late 80s. The put us all on the spot whenever we did this.
Not proud to say that the habit still lingers.
Great reminder to be vigilant and watch for the signs your language gives about your thinking…

Loved your Twitter capsule review of Stratford. Too bad about the pasta, there are so many decent restaurants there, it’s a shame you had a mediocre meal.
