I’d rather see Danny Pudi (Abed in Community) playing Spiderman. While Donald Glover would be cool, well, that’s just the problem – he’s just too cool – Peter Parker is supposed to be a nerdy outcast who can’t get a girlfriend. Pudi has nerdy and awkward nailed, and he has proven many times in Community that he can also pull of confident and strong.

This is spectacular. And the ghetto-ness makes amateurs like me think that it’s within our own grasp when it clearly is not. Like anyone at the top of their game, it’s not just DOING the thing that’s impressive, it’s making it look so easy that sitting on my couch I’m thinking “I could SO do that!”

My greater concern really is about young children. My sense is that a lot of people don’t know much about early childhood development, and so may not appreciate how much learning and development takes place through tactile, physical play. As much as I love my video games, I don’t think a 5-year old is disadvantaged at all by not using them.

Very valid concerns — most of which I share. Despite my outspokenness about innovation and progress, I actually tend to be pretty conservative — in the original Burkean sense of “let’s build on, rather than destroy, all the good stuff we already have.” I sat through enough failed computer sessions in 80′s classrooms (e.g. 45 minutes to get everyone booted up and logged in before the bell rings) to know sophistication isn’t necessarily improvement.

I especially like your idea about “keeping some old stand-bys in the mix” and “giving them a deeper toolkit.” If digital media is as effective as we all want it to be then it shouldn’t be hard to learn anyways.

In Peterborough there is a dancing clown outside of a flowershop during the hot summer months. I always hope that it’s not a minimum-wage teenager risking heat stroke! Then again, the dedication and enthusiasm for a job like that might mean it’s the owner?
